FLOWER DAY AREAN
There is nowhere else in the entire metro Detroit Michigan area, you can go and have the opportunity to barter, and negotiate over Detroit Flower Day flower prices. Sales people at big-box stores and retailers don't have the authority to lower prices. But, many growers at the market are also the greenhouse owners. Therefore they know how far to reduce a price or how necessary it is to hold a price and have the final word to do so.
THE LITTLE GREEN TRUCK
FLOWER DAY THE PRETTIEST PETUNIAS I HAD EVER SEEN IN 50 YEARS!
I have personally watched customers try to bully or insult vendors into a low-ball price; that is not the technique used here. For instance, one early morning at the Flower Day I stood gazing down at the most beautiful flat of petunias anyone has even seen grown by a very small grower, both him and his wife looked under five feet in height, and they had a very small dark green truck.
A customer question why these wholesale flats cost $3.00 more than the others in Shed 4, the seller got irritated and told the person to ..."go find it like this!" As he proudly stated with his hands on both sides, chest stuck out as he popped up on his toes chuckling. I did not waste any time and purchased several flats for his asking price and gave them a tip these gorgeous flats were worth more than their $9 asking price could easily retail at $15-$20.
I never take advantage of an individual and always tipped when appropriate. I never again found flats of petunias that looked as good those of the little farmer in the little green truck. The farmer told me the seed variety was called Ultra Mix of which I searched but could not find the same; there are lots seed brands out there, but, as the little farmer said and I concur, "Not like this."
Now, if you listen to me and put into action what I tell you, and do it all in a fun, and good-spirited nature and, the vendors will always be glad to see you coming year after year on flower day.
FLOWER DAY NEGOTIATIONS?
But what does Flower Day negotiations really mean? Do you picture yourself as needing to be a master debater, or involved in lots of screaming and yelling, pressuring a farmer or vendor to give you a deal? BUT, WHAT IS NEGOTIATION? Negotiation is defined as discussion aimed at reaching an amicable agreement. It is even more than that, it involves a kind of subtle psychology, personality, observation skills.
ARE YOU A NATURAL NEGOTIATOR?
A natural negotiator may not even be aware of their persuasive skills. They look ordinary, talk originally, but always just seem to get everything they want seemingly using very little effort. If you had the pleasure of observing such individuals, you can learn to replicate their technique. Such individuals are not trying to be crafty at the least. First of all I noticed they are not insulting to the seller or they do not forcefully attempt to brow-beat the farmer. These Flower shoppers demonstrate a sincere and complimentary attitude to whom they are attempting to do business. Most are warm personalities infectious to most any seller.
MARKET AVAILABILITY
RARE PLANTS, HIGHER PRICES
Flower Day Three Main Elements - When it comes to negotiating to get discount flower prices, there are three elements involved:
• 1-there is you the buyer,
• 2-the seller and
• 3-the bedding plants, flower flats.
If you have the cash money and the grower is experience normal sales volume there is a 50% chance to negotiate a reasonable deal. However, if Flower Day sales are a little slow, your chances are much higher to getting a great deal. On the other hand, if on the other hand it is crawling with tons of desperate consumers looking for a specific item, and a seller happens to have that item, your chances of negotiating a lower price is slim to none. But, deals abound even during the entire summer flower shopping season.
DEAL9
OPPORTUNITY 9
Flower Day presents opportunity is a way to get better deals. But, as explained earlier, an understanding of market dynamics that represents the most favorable conditions for negotiations is paramount in knowing exactly when to negotiate or not. When to just pay the full price of start a process of getting a better deal. Good old Supply & Demand conditions in fact will influence plant prices more than anything else. As mentioned before, if a hot commodity such as some tall red zinnias, is in scarce supply then the grower will have no reason to negotiate or bargain with anyone. ONLY a pre established strong buyer/seller relationship might get you that rare deal in a hot market.
FLOWER DAY BARGAINS 9
There are thousands of cut flowers, garden outdoor-plants, potted flowering plants, garden plants, annual bedding plant deals of all kinds being made a second as you walk the flower day grounds. Some shoppers are paying far less for the same product others are paying far more. One buyer close their deal and seconds later another buyer walks up and pay full price to the same farmer for the same flowers.
We are going to dive deep into the fine details of how this happens and how easily you can achieve the best deal with minimum effort and stress-free flower hunting during your flower day shopping.
DEAL10
GREENHOUSE GROWERS 10
Shopping pleasure at the flower day eastern market is almost guaranteed. Low flower pricing, No up-sells. Only customer-friendly Farmer. Where else can you go to avoid all kinds of slick deceptive advertising that bait you in on a low price then switch you to a higher-priced item? Or sell you flats with low plant counts? Flower Day covers the entire produce spectrum of gardening plants and you can still find 48 plant counts for as low as $7 during flower day.
FLOWERS FOR EVERY NEED 10
So, if you are in need for some run-down cheap flowers that only need a little tender loving care to bring them back to a lush and beautiful condition, you can find them if you know what to look for. If on the other hand you want only the very best one of a kind or the largest and price is not an object, Flower Day is waiting for you. I have seen 5-6-foot geranium totems for only $50 vs $100 in outlying areas. Think of how much you just saved if you needed four of these beauties for mother day gifts, or a wedding.
DEAL11
GROWERS VISIT 11
Sometimes flower day eastern market deals are not so obvious. By the way, I knew this one Ohio grower one on the largest in the country, who delivered a truckload of flowers at my establishment. This grower proceeded to sit down and started telling me lots of flower related sales stories. By the way he didn't have to deliver the flowers himself, he was just being a little nosy seeing all the bedding plants I was buying that summer. During that time I was buying a full tractor trailer load of flowers nearly every day from different farmers. It was quite common for some greenhouse owners to visit my operation.

A FLOWER STORYâTHE GOLDEN DEAL 11
This same Ohio grower who was one of many Flower Day vendors for years who shared with me a story of how he made what he refers to as "the golden deal." One day a distraught wedding planner came to his greenhouse in great distress, something about serious issues regarding a large flower shipment that did not arrive. Now, this grower just happen to had some gorgeous inventory in his greenhouse but those flowers were per-destined for several malls located all across lower Michigan and could not break a contract to sell those flowers even at a much higher price the wedding planner would have offered.
It would seem that the wedding planner was screwed right?
Here's what a little ingenuity can do for you; the grower offered to rent a truckload of a zillion hanging basket flowers for only a few hours. He agreed to have his workers deliver, setup and hang around until the wedding was over then reload back on the truck, then headed off to make his delivery to the malls. The wedding planners was ecstatic at the idea. The grower told me this was the best and quickest flower deal he had ever made and was quite proud of it. Think about it for a minute: 1 - the grower made extra money on inventory, 2 - made this money in a short amount of record time, 3 - re-routed the same inventory to honor a standing contract. Plus, he benefited both himself and prevented a wedding disaster. It was a triple win/win negotiation for both parties.
The grower netted $4500 for 4 hours on that deal.
DEAL12
DEAL13
FLOWER DAY VENUE & FACTS
Remember earlier I quoted some sale statistics on how many flowers are being bought and sold? The first arrivals of both flower customers and sellers have the potential to make the best deals. Nearly 75% of the flower growers arrive early around 1-2 o'clock in the AM. What they don't get rid of to wholesale flower buyers during those early morning hours is fair game for the right smaller consumer buyer who happens to wander into a slow selling period, later around 4-5 o'clock in the morning.
Combine that with the fact that many of those semi-trucks are packed & racked from front to back, floor to ceiling with about 2000 flats on one semi-truck.
TIME OF DAY 13
You should be starting to get the idea why all these stats are so important. During Flower DAy, It is crucial to understand both time of day, season and quantity as it relates to the annual & perinnial flower sales during the summer season.
There is a common statement that every grower knows what is meant by the saying... "what time it is?"
If you ever really wanted to make the best flower deals, you should thoroughly understand the direct relationship between time of day, and time of seasons. The impact has a bearing on the potential outcome of many predictable quality deal makings.
DEAL14
KNOW FLOWER PRICES 14
You must know prices! One of the worse things you can do is go to flower shopping with zero knowledge on available inventory. What are the hot-selling products is it white petunias, red impatiens, or pink gin colored begonias? Second big mistake is to have no knowledge of pricing by not knowing what the average gardening plants prices is certain bedding plant flowers and hanging baskets are selling for.
If you plan to go to Flower Day and garnish the absolute best deals without knowing any of this, it is equivalent to throwing your money out the car window. Not to mention the risk of insult or embarrassment.
FLOWER DAY SHADE PLANT RESEARCH
FLOWER POLL
The results are in!
After 4000 votes and by a margins of nearly 4 to 1. Impatiens are the clear winner.
Flower Day shoppers confirm impatiens vs begonias as their favorite shade plants used in landscapes. It remains one of the most popular summer bedding plants. Impatiens are well beloved for their large vibrant, dense blooms that can add beauty of any section of the home-owners flower beds. The cultivar comes in a wide range of colors, heights, and resistance including their their ability to thrive in sun or shade.
STORY 14
When I started going to Flower Day as an adult to buy my flowers I was young. I remember the first time I learned an important lesson about being ignorant of flower price. I approached a grower's helper that I had dealt with earlier that summer. I already set aside six beautiful white impatiens hanging baskets. He eventually came over and gave me a price of $6.00 each. I countered with the most sincere and cordial offer... "can you let me have them for $5 dollars each" I asked.
I'll never forget his response. He was an elderly gentleman, very knowledgeable about flower day this individual has been a greenhouse vendor selling flowers for 30 years. He had multiple write-up in the local Detroit News during his earlier glorious flower selling days.
So he took a long couple of minutes rubbing his chin, looking down at the hanging baskets until finally he spoke, but it was not what I wanted to hear. He replied... "Son, how can I help you, if you don't know good deal when you see one?"
I quickly said OK and paid his price. But later as I walked the flower day isles, that same morning I discovered that the color white was exceedingly scarce. In fact, that old man had just bought all the white flowers on the entire market and was planning to make a killing. He could have sold those baskets for $12 each in a blink of an eye. Here I was, trying to make a what I called "a deal." After that, boy did I feel foolish. He the old guy was already giving me the best deal of a flower lovers lifetime.
This particular fellow was one of the smartest persons you ever wanted to meet during a Flower Day event. Sometimes I was invited into the trailer for donuts. He shared a personal story of how the grower whom he worked for met him under the ambassador bridge passed him a bag of cash money so he could pay cash for his house. This person would share many funny and unbelievable stories about his interactions with customers. He pointed out all the mobsters that came to flower day to buy their flowers. Yeah, mobsters like flowers too. He had many hilarious and unbelievable stories to share.
My point here as I stated earlier it is of critical importance that you educate yourself on flower price, availability, and what's hot. Why, so you will at the least know a good deal when you see one during flower day or any other flower shopping day.
DEAL15
GREENHOUSE GROWERS 15
Flower Day Eastern Market Can Be Tricky
Although most growers are members of several grower associations and horticultural societies each are fiercely independent and competitive. There are even many family feuds within the organization. Some are like scenes out of the old movie Dallas where you had sibling rivalry and internal hostile takeover attempts.
Just to know some of these personal intricacies can get you a better flower deal than normal. If you get to know some of these flower growers pretty well you can detect them trying to manipulate you from going over to their rival uncles greenhouse operation just across the road.
ALL GROWERS ARE NOT EQUAL - BEWARE
CAN YOU SPOT BAD PLANTS?
I have been attending flower sale on weekends long enough to see almost every kind of growers scam there is. Yes, they do exists but only a few growers will try to take advantage of the unsuspecting shoppers. Ever wonder why some of your flowers mysteriously died?
RED SPIDER MITES ON FLOWER DAY?
Check under leaves for mites. I had growers that were financially hurting whom I didn't know that well knowingly sell me diseased plant materials.
3 THINGS TO CHECK FOR
STORY 15
Flower Day is just the beginning-Always on the search for great inventory, I visited several greenhouses in Michigan and Ohio. On this occasion my travels took me to the Kalamazoo area which is one of Michigan's largest greenhouse flouriculture enclaves.
I had a half of a truckload of flowers purchased at an already good price. I was already to leave this greenhouse to go down the road to another. After discovering my intentions the grower casually started to offer me more flowers at an even better deal than on the ones we just made. He was willing to sacrifice to do this only to prevent me from going to give his sibling some business. Of curse not letting on that I knew anything about their personal business, I quickly took the deal and saved $2000 dollars.
Now this grower didn't lose any money. During that time period in the 80s it costs $2.50 to grow a flat of bedding plants. He sold them to me for 3.00 vs $5 a flat. Had he not sold them to me right then and there, he could have experienced something greenhouse growers call shrinkage a small percentage loss of merchandise due to normal growing operations. They try to keep it under 2%, but weather can unexpectedly hit a long hot spell and their shrinkage can increase to over 10% or more.
I fell into a good deal only because this grower wanted to spite his cousins from a sale.
Had I not known this personal family rivalry information, I would have been too suspicious to buy those flowers fearing he was pushing some bad product to get rid of it and I would have passed up what turned out to be a very good deal.
DEAL16
OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS 16
While each deal can be different, and each opportunity can manifest itself in some ways that are not so obvious. Some of the best deals are presented in uncharted territory. You therefore must be both observant and quick witted to translate a potential situation into a price savings good opportunity on Flower Day Eastern Market or any weekend.
SECRETS BEHIND FLOWER DAY 16
This site provides a rare behind the curtain peak of how sometimes flower day pricing is influenced by other hidden factors. The insight you gain will help you make better deals and when not to try to make a deal and just pay the asking price.
Previously I already shared some behind the scene light about the quantified scope of flower day such as the volume of bedding plants, flower flats sold and dynamics such as product availability and what product is currently hot or in high demand both these factors ultimately drive the price on flower day.
DEAL17
DEAL18
BE IN IT FOR THE LONG TERM 18
As you know, after visiting many flower shows, over the past 50 years I learned to play the long-term flower strategy instead of just following the lowest price one hundred percent of the time at any costs to developing relationships. For instance, there were times I was offered to buy some additional garden bedding plants, flower potted plants that I didn't really need. But I could see the grower was in a situation, what the horticulture industry refers to as being "long-on" this is a condition when a grower is particular flooded with a certain variety of flowers in this instance it as petunias. I purchased and took a few off the growers hands to reduce their financial loss and I had no problems moving the extra plants through my store. No, we did not have any pre-agreement to look out for one another's interest. This is what I mean by when I explain that you must be in it for playing the long-game. Which can translates into potential future outdoor/garden plant deals even on Flower Day.
STORY 18 - FLOWER DAY FARMERS & VENDORS
There I was returning home after a long day at the road-side nursery. I just got out of the car and was heading towards the door when my phone rang. It was from one of my very familiar growers in Ohio. But, this call was from the owners son whom I have never met before. He explained that his father wanted him to call and offer me a truck-load of begonias for only $2 each. Now mind you this is in mid-season when flower prices are at their highest price point. Of course I was elated and jumped on the deal. What is most interesting about this story is the value of cultivating long-term of relations. This is most important, this is what I wanted you to get from this the greenhouse owners were intelligent enough to know the value of trusted business relationships so much so, they would introduce their children to establish and extend the relationships for the next generation with certain flower buyers as myself.
DEAL19
THE PAY-OFF? 19
Occasionally as an unrequested favor from me, as an extended courtesy, some greenhouse growers will load my flowers at the end of their trucks so that my store was the first stop in the delivery matrix. This meant an early morning delivery when the load in most fresh and needed for my customers. The power of mutual trustworthy relationships vs immediate profits & money only. Other times it meant rushing a truckload out to my store in the middle of the day or even ocassionally on the most hectic of days "Flower Day " when I desperately needed inventory.
REAL FLOWER DEALS 19
It's the same thing. Only during flower day do you have the opportunity to develop a buyer/seller relationship. You can't do this at any of the big-box stores or anywhere else.
DEAL20
MAKING GOOD FLOWER DAY DEALS 20
Getting the best garden plants during flower day is more than just price hunting. As a flower buyer, it would be to your advantage to frequently visit a couple of the same flower vendors. You both will become more familiar with each other. These same growers once they know what you like will hold the largest hanging baskets for you and sell you a $30 hanging basket for $5 of course you are going to demand to buy some of their beautiful merchandise at regular price because you want to keep them in business. Think about that. The grower just saved this lady $25 dollars. She's has also planned to buy four flats which translates into $5 off each $10 flat. Her final flat price per flat was only $5. What a sweet peak-of-the-season flower day deal. Not so obvious, but great savings.
REAL FLOWER DEALS 20
NOT SO OBVIOUS The point here is that often some of the best deals are not so blunt and straightforward such as asking an vendor hey, "can you knock $4 dollars of each flat."
You have the potential to get far more off than a mere $2 per flat if you remain observant and develop a more sophisticated approach based on flower day buying/selling dynamics vs infinite low-price greed.
Here Is What To Do Next

And if you want to keep your deal making skills up to date, I will be adding many more stories to this best price related website in the coming day leading up to flower day.
